Empatheias Canon Update: Kingdom Hearts 3

Player: CS
Character: Lea
Current Canon Point: Post Dream Drop Distance
Updated Canon Point: Post Kingdom Hearts 3

Updated Background: After rescuing Sora from Xehanort’s clutches at the end of Dream Drop Distance, much of Lea’s time is spent training with Kairi in the Secret Forest, to prepare them for the upcoming battle with Master Xehanort and his thirteen Seekers of Darkness. Time in this realm flows differently from normal, allowing the two plenty of time to train up and discover how to master their abilities. In this world, Lea and Kairi develop an unexpected friendship the more time they spend together. Lea apologizes numerous times about how he had kidnapped Kairi as a Nobody, to the point where she has to request he stop apologizing, and also admits that looking at Kairi makes him feel like he’s forgotten something, but can’t remember what it was he forgot. He agrees to stop apologizing to Kairi, but on the condition that she call him ‘Axel’ instead of Lea. This is largely because during his and Kairi’s post-sparring break, Kairi requests that he no longer hold back when fighting, which prompts memories of Xion to trigger in Lea.

During their time training, both Kairi and Lea have a few heart-to-heart conversations. Kairi admits how she misses Sora and the letters she writes to him are more for herself rather than to send to him, and the two bond over how they both want both Naminé and Roxas to be free. Both receive new clothes from Merlin and the Good Fairies to protect them from the Darkness, but Lea is reluctant to change out of his cloak, being too used to wearing it. Lea tells Kairi of when he met Ventus, and how he nearly forgot about him until he first saw Roxas. He admits that he never told Roxas about how he looked identical to Ventus because he was afraid that if he did, Roxas would somehow vanish like Ventus did. When he says he was worried about Ventus forgetting about him, he is reassured by Kairi hat Ventus probably does still remember him and would be happy to see him again.

Later on, both Lea and Kairi meet up with Sora, Donald, Goofy, Mickey, and the recently-rescued Aqua and Ventus, the former of which was rescued from the Realm of Darkness by Mickey, Riku and Sora and the latter of which was found and reawakened by Aqua, Sora, Donald, and Goofy. Though the group is informed about what has transpired and Master Yen Sid discusses their next course of action, Lea openly complains about his confusion about everyone’s apparent connection with one another, as he was not aware of how everyone’s paths crossed ten years prior. He wonders about Ventus’s and Roxas’s identical appearances, and even goes so far as to admit that “this is an insane amount to get memorized!” However, Ventus notices Lea and acknowledges them, surprising Sora and the others about their prior friendship.

On the night before their meetup at the Keyblade Graveyard, Lea ventures to the Twilight Town clock tower, watching the sunset while eating a sea-salt ice cream and lamenting over being unable to help Roxas. To his surprise, Saïx appears and joins him atop the clock tower, admitting he isn’t there to pick a fight. He asks why Lea bought three ice creams instead of just one (asking “One for Roxas and two for good luck?”), though Lea cannot answer why. He gets upset with Saïx’s presence, and Saïx begins to talk about the day they became apprentices to Ansem the Wise in Radiant Garden. They had done so because as kids, one day they had snuck into the castle and met a girl locked away inside. They befriended her and swore to rescue her, but one day she vanished, and thus they became apprentices to Ansem the Wise to try and find her. Saïx accuses Lea of abandoning her, as well as abandoning their friendship in order to make new friends with Roxas (and Xion, though Lea cannot remember her). Lea gets upset, denying the accusation and points out that he never abandoned Saïx either since he helped the man climb up the ranks in Organization XIII to find any information about their missing friend. Saïx remarks that Lea doesn’t have the upside-down tears on his face anymore, which were apparently a sort of charm meant to stop him from crying. Angry with Saïx, Lea declares he will find their missing friend and bring both her and Roxas back, as well as beat Saïx in the final battle.

The next day, Lea and the other Guardians of Light travel to the Keyblade Graveyard to wage war with Xehanort and his vessels. Things start out disastrously; after being attacked by thousands of Heartless, Nobodies, and Unversed, Terra-Xehanort appears and overpowers the group; Lea himself was thrown into a stone wall after blocking a hit meant for Kairi. After this, a Demon Tide (a massive whirlwind of Heartless) appeared and swallowed the group. They would have all perished had Sora not managed to rescue everyone’s hearts using his newly-awakened Power of Waking ability, and they return to the Keyblade Graveyard. Here, Master Yen Sid is able to arrive in time to help hold off the Heartless and allow the group to press forward and fight. Lea teams up with Kairi to fight against Saïx and a hooded figure wielding a Keyblade. Sora joins the fray, but the three are overpowered by Saïx. Lea attempts to fend Saix off, calling him Isa and begging him to stop, but is unsuccessful. Xemnas appears, remarking about the irony of Lea being a traitor when he originally was entrusted to dispose of traitors to the Organization. Xemnas overpowers Lea, but before he can eliminate him, the hooded figure intervenes and states that they need Lea alive. Xemnas instead leaves the task to the figure, stating that they were once friends and that the figure should dispose of him. Lea, unable to identify the figure, asks who she is, though she merely points her keyblade at him. It isn’t until Sora intervenes to plead with her, calling her Xion. This sets of a chain-reaction of events wherein Xion becomes overwhelmed, her face is revealed, and Lea’s memories of her reawaken. In addition to this, Roxas’s heart escapes Sora, finds the replica vessel that was being prepared for him, and reappears, ready to save his friends.

Xemnas, at this point, kidnaps Kairi and leaves Sora, Roxas, and Xion to fight against a berserk Saïx, with Lea unable to help due to his injuries. Once the trio subdue Saïx, however, Lea rushes over to Saix and holds him as he falls. Saïx asks why Lea is so sad, and that it looked like he still needed those teardrops after all. Lea, overcome with anger and sadness, expresses his anger and disgust over what Saïx had become while in the Organization. Saïx admits that he knew that Lea would never abandon any friend he made, and that he was jealous of Lea making new friends with Xion and Roxas. Severely weakened by his injuries, Saïx fades away, but not before Lea and him agree to see each other some day. After this, Xion, Roxas, and Lea have a teary, yet heartfelt reunion as they embrace each other.

After this, Lea and the other reunite again for one last showdown with Master Xehanort. He helps the other Guardians in using their Keyblades on Master Xehanort to trap him in Scala ad Caelum, where Sora has one final clash with Master Xehanort. After Sora’s battle with Master Xehanort, the group reappear before the defeated Master, where a ghostly apparition of Master Eraqus, who’s heart had been resting inside Terra’s, appears and appeals to master Xehanort, who had once been his friend. Master Xehanort finally admits his mistakes and gives the newly-forged X-Blade to Sora before fading away with Master Eraqus, seemingly passing on. Lea then assists Sora and the others in purifying the corrupted Kingdom Hearts and restoring order once more, before being brought back to the Keyblade Graveyard. All is well again, save that Kairi had been lost and Sora, after a brief discussion with Lea and the others, goes on a solo journey to recover her.

After Kairi is recovered (the exact details of how are unknown), Lea, Roxas, and Xion go to Twilight Town, meeting up on the Clock Tower. Lea has finally changed out of his Organization cloak into new clothes, and the three celebrate their reunion with some sea-salt ice cream. They aren’t alone, though; Saïx, recompleted as Isa, joins them in Twilight Town, as do Hayner, Pence, and Olette, Roxas’s friends from Twilight Town. Later on, the five of them are picked up by Riku in the Gummi Ship and taken to Destiny Islands, where a big celebration amongst all of the Guardians of Light, Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and even Naminé, who was given her own replica body. During the celebration, Lea and the others watch on as Kairi has one final contact with Sora before he mysteriously fades away.

Updated Personality: Not much has changed about Lea’s personality, except maybe perhaps his emotions coming out stronger. It was said that the marks under his eyes from his time as a Nobody were there to prevent him from crying, though whether this is a truly magic charm of some sort or just a superstitious thing is unclear. But he does seem more openly emotional in Kingdom Hearts 3, even crying a few times on-screen.

Updated Abilities: Lea’s fire abilities remained largely unchanged, though his combat skills have improved in general. Thanks to his training with Merlin, the Good Fairies and Kairi, Lea is much more competent when wielding his Keyblade. His Keyblade also has the ability to transform into his old chakrams at will, allowing him to use a combination of swordplay and his old fighting style with his chakrams.

Other: Lea will be returning with a brand new outfit (As seen here, here, and here), as well as a Gummiphone. Just by looking at the other KH cast’s take with Gummiphones, it will need to be outfitted with new cores so that it can work in Empatheias.

Also, in Dream Drop Distance Lea was a bit more adamant in making sure people called him ‘Lea’ and not ‘Axel’. In Kingdom Hearts 3 he is more lenient about this, even requesting Kairi call him Axel instead (though this was most likely due to her connection with Xion and his trying to remember Xion). For simplicity’s sake I will continue to have him be referred to as Lea and will introduce himself to new players as Lea, though if a character knew him as Axel and calls him that, he won’t correct them about it.

Questions: I am coming back from hiatus on March 4th, and right now Lea is a crystal (and has been since February). Is it ok for him to stay as a crystal for a couple days longer in lieu of him vanishing from the game, and then have him pop out canon-updated? Or should he pop out of crystal, vanish, and THEN come back canon-updated? Thanks!
